Compost Toilet Flat Pack

Compost Toilet Flat Pack

NZ$460.00

This simple composting toilet comes as a flat pack to use in many situations - tiny home, caravan, boat, cabin, your home etc. We have used untreated plywood with stainless steel hinges and screws; we have created it so that no flies can enter, unlike other systems on the market. We have been using this compost toilet system for the last 10 years and get so many questions about them - so decided to offer one. We have made the lid of it extra wide, for those of you who like to squat on the toilet - which has a lot of benefits. Also now comes with a Compost loo how-to poster.

Measurements: Width - 600mm, Height - 440mm, Depth 550mm. Set comes with all wooden parts, hinges and screws. Would recommend sealing with either tung oil, linseed oil or a natural paint so that it can be wiped clean easier.

Let’s talk about humanure; our poo essentially, and how we take this precious resource and use its fertility instead of flushing it away to a treatment plant, the ocean or to a tank. Water is a valuable resource and so is our humanure, by recycling the nutrients back onto the land instead of creating pollution somewhere else, we are increasing our resiliency skills.

Every time someone flushes a normal toilet, approx. 10 litres of clean, drinkable water is flushed away, contaminated with poo and wees. Having a compost toilet is a little bit of a mind-shift, but really it is just like the composting you are doing in your backyard with your food scraps; based around aerobic breakdown of organic matter.

To be a part of the closed-loop system of growing our food, eating it, excreting it and then composting it - we are giving back to the earth what we had originally borrowed from it. It's just part of human life - we all gotta poop!

With this bucket system we simply do our business and put on a bit of sawdust and then close the lid, when the bucket is full we take it outside, put the lid on and replace the bucket. You can read more here on the composting situation of the humanure; but basically the mass heap of buckets, all in one go, triggers a mass of microbial activity which reaches thermophilic temperatures to kill the pathogens (around 55degrees, which is important to check with a thermometer).

We don't separate out our pee in this system as we haven't found the smell to be a problem at all, people often comment that the toilet doesn't smell and they are surprised, but you can buy wee separators if you like.

Please note: This system has been designed for a 20l bucket, these are not included with the flat pack system. You can gather 20l buckets from Mitre 10, Bunnings, recycled buckets or old ones from bakeries/cafes who buy products in bulk.
